Service on the Long Island Rail Road slowly gets back on track after a massive fire breaks out near tracks in Jamaica.

Fire officials say flames broke out Friday afternoon just east of Jamaica Station at a recycling plant near 187th Place and Jamaica Avenue.

The plant recycles mostly newspaper and cardboard products — some stacked up to 15 feet high.

"We predict we'll be operating through here probably for the next 18 hours or so due to the size of the fire," said FDNY Borough Commander Edward Baggott. "And it's just a very deep-seated fire. Ultimately, what we're going to have to do is we're taking in heavy machinery we're operating in the back. We are basically going to remove some of the accumulated burning rubbish and carting it out with heavy dumpsters. It's gonna be a long, protracted operation through the night and into tomorrow."

One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Winds up to 25 miles per hour are making it difficult for firefighters to get flames under control.

Westbound service remains suspended, according to the LIRR.

Service had been suspended in both directions on the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay and Hempstead branches.

The fire is not on LIRR property.

Fares are being cross-honored on NYC Transit at Jamaica, Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and Woodside.
