NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Though the Foreclosure Prevention Law passed in New York State, Niagara Falls Community Development Zombie Fight Project is taking legal action against banks.

A settlement between Citizens Bank and the Zombie Fight Project will be voted on at a Niagara Falls City Council meeting Thursday night.

The purpose of the settlement is to set a 60-day timeline for banks to fix code violations or sell the home. If by the end of 60 days they do not follow these rules, legal action will be taken.

While legal action is not always taken, progress is still seen within the community.

“Our residents are asked to maintain their properties. Banks with financial resources need to do the same. This is ultimately about accountability and fairness,” said Seth Piccirillo, the director of Niagara Falls Community Development and Code Enforcement.

Niagara Falls Community Development says the settlement would be significant because it won’t be just for specific addresses, but will be applied to future properties.
