A Staten Island restaurant has called off a controversial fundraiser for the National Rifle Association (NRA) after community backlash.

The Vanderbilt catering hall in South Beach was set to host the event Sept. 21.

But after calls from several of the borough's Democrats to cancel the event, the restaurant's owners confirmed Thursday that the catering hall will no longer hold the event. The restaurant owners would not comment further.

Several Staten Island Republicans had voiced their support of the event.

This comes a week after Coney Island restaurant Gargiulo's cancelled a fundraiser for the NRA that was scheduled for next month. In a raffle and auction at the event, participants would have had a chance to win, in part, a handgun and a rifle.

Garguilo's cancelled the event in the wake of pressure from local elected officials and community members.
