Crossing a big commercial strip in Queens is about to get much safer according to a local lawmaker.

City Council Member Costa Constantinides announced this week that the City Department of Transportation will be installing traffic signals in the middle of several blocks along Steinway Street between 30th and 34th Avenues.

Right now traffic lights along the commercial corridor are about half a mile away from each other and officials say that leads to jaywalking which of course can be dangerous.

"If you're going from Children's Place to the Gap, let's say, the easiest way to cross the street is to just walk across. This will now allow for that to be a safe, signaled cross," said Constantinides.

The traffic lights and curb extensions will be installed this spring.
