NEW YORK - A local public radio station is helping to bring the Gothamist and DNAinfo websites back to life.

WNYC bought the assets of the local news sites in a deal funded by two anonymous private donors.

Public radio stations in New York, Los Angeles and Washington are taking over the archives and social media accounts of Gothamist and DNAinfo.

The sites were shut down last November by their billionaire owner, Joe Ricketts, after the writers unionized.

A spokesperson for New York Public Radio said WNYC plans to relaunch Gothamist in the spring.
