A New York lawmaker wants to ensure a fair market for taxis and for-hire vehicles.

Congressman Adriano Espaillat met with members of the Taxi And Limousine Commission task force to discuss the need for restructuring.

He's calling for better policies in response to the growing number of for-hire vehicles and ride share apps.

"I think that they need to adapt to a new dynamic in the transportation modality's use in New York City," Espaillat said. "Traditionally they regulated yellow cabs, livery cabs and black cars. But now you have the emergence of the green car, Uber and other modalities that will put added pressure on the commission which I think is very archaic and not able to respond to the new needs of the industry."

Espaillat says he will also request the Department of Justice to investigate what he calls "selective enforcement" and discrimination within in the TLC.
