LILLINGTON -- The North Carolina Department of Public Safety is doubling down on security in state prisons.

This week the National Institute of Corrections is training North Carolina prison employees on conducting security audits.

It's all part of the newly formed Security Accountability Unit within DPS. This measure comes after inmates killed 5 prison employees in our state last year.

Leaders are confident the training will lead to improvements.

"Audits are important because obviously because we want to make sure the staff are aware of the security functions and what to successfully operate a a prison facility," said Loris Sutton, assistant director of the unit.

The training will wrap up on Friday.
