IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. -- Town Supervisor Dave Seeley is proposing lowering motor vehicle speed limits in Irondequoit.

The initiative would reduce the default town speed limit to 30 miles per hour.

Last year, the Town Board experimented by creating school speed zones near Irondequoit and Eastridge High Schools.

The proposed legislation would lower the speed limit on roads near all Irondequoit schools to 25 miles per hour. The speed limit in designated school zones would be lowered to 20 miles per hour under the proposal.

“These proposed reductions of the speed limit are introduced with the safety of all Irondequoit residents in mind, particularly our children. Irondequoit is our area’s most densely-populated town and these measures are long-overdue and much needed.” said Supervisor Seeley.

Under the new proposal, some county roads will remain at 35 miles per hour.

Sea Breeze Drive will maintain its speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

A public hearing on the proposed changes will be held March 20th at 7:00 pm at Irondequoit Town Hall.
