SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Christian Rohr may have been an operations analyst for Ayco by day. But he was also passionate about cooking and seeking new adventures.

"I think what most of us remember him for is the fact that he was always outdoors doing something," said Laurie Garramone, Christian's mother. "He had a lot of energy."

On February 25, 2017, Rohr was outside enjoying a mild winter day, hiking along the Poestenkill Gorge in Troy. Police say that is when Rohr fell into the water. His body was found a few weeks later in Rensselaer.

"Nobody ever wants to receive that phone call and nobody ever wants to make that phone call," Garramone said.

Nearly a year after that tragic accident, Rohr's family wants others to know how special their son and brother was. On Tuesday, they presented a $10,000 donation at Schenectady County Community College to establish the "Christian Rohr's Passion for Cooking Scholarship."

"I think he would be happy that somebody that loves to cook is going to be supported and he loved to cook," said Don Rohr, Christian's father.

The new scholarship will be given to students pursuing a culinary arts degree at SCCC. Rohr's family says he was once a community college student himself, before going on to earn a degree in business administration from UAlbany.

"If we can somehow support a student that's working their way through community college and go on toward something more excellent, then that would be great," Don Rohr said.

Rohr's family hopes this scholarship will continue to grow, with more donations in the future. They also say this is just the beginning of several projects as they continue to honor his memory.
