The FDNY held a cookout Tuesday to raise money for firefighters who are battling cancer.

The event raised money and awareness for "Fired Up For a Cure," an organization within the fire department to help firefighters combat cancer.

The cook-off promoted healthy eating and lifted spirits for sick firefighters, their families, and colleagues, many of whom were sickened by 9/11-related illnesses.

"I know, personally, a lot of firefighters who are sick and dying, and have died from Trade Center-related illnesses, and there's a big need for help there," said one cook-off participant.

The organization said that, as of September, 170 firefighters have died from 9/11-related cancers.
