CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Football season may be over at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, but many say the field conditions are getting worse.

"As you go through practices and summer workouts and home games by the end of the season there are about 20 or 30 yards in the middle of the football field of sand,” says Myles MacDonald, student athlete at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology.

When it rains, students say the field has bad drainage and beverage containers cover a portion of the field that's uneven.

Students say these issues aren't just a safety hazard for them but other athletes.

"And I've seen personally schools take out their best athletes so they don't risk getting injuries,” says MacDonald.

Parents like Dana MacDonald want CMS to replace this field with turf.

"We have people that are making clear choices to be student athletes and stay off streets and they're doing what we can to be responsible people in the community and we're putting them in harm’s way,” says MacDonald, parent.

CMS Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox has visited the school several times and he said they're taking these concerns seriously.

"We believe that we can attack this problem differently and we can do it with perhaps some funds that we may find available at the end of the budget year,” says Wilcox.

A CMS spokesperson said the building services team is coming up with options for improving the field which includes estimates for replacing it all together.
