People in Elmira got a chance to speak to lawmakers about the issues that matter to them Thursday.

Some of the topics discussed included the city's feral cat problem and street cleaning issues.

The proposed budget with the 17 percent property tax hike was also brought up.

Organizers say communication between leaders and citizens is critical.

"It keeps the public aware of what's going on from city hall to the government and let them know that the city hall is working very hard for the citizens here in Elmira,” said District 4 Councilor John Massey. “It also lets them know that we are working together. We need their input of what's going on in the city.

A public hearing for the city budget is planned for Tuesday.
