In the wake of the shooting, many are calling on federal leaders to take action to prevent another tragedy like this.

Local congressional representatives said it's a difficult situation, and not an easy fix.

Many are calling for new gun control measures, but Representatives Tom Reed and John Katko both said those talks need to focus on mental health.

"We have to endeavor to have the tough conversations that neither side really wants to hear,” said Katko. “And that is how to you keep guns out of the hands of these individuals who have mental health issues. And not just types of guns, all guns."

"This is the harder conversation,” said Reed. “Because you're talking about individuals that have a medical condition, making sure that their rights are protected through this entire process, but then also getting them the resources, getting them the treatments and the cures that will potentially make sure their mental health condition is addressed."
