Battling cancer or another illness is bad enough.

For some women, losing their hair in the process makes a difficult time even worse.

In 2014, Cherise Walker Betts was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat the illness but lost her hair in the process.

The struggle inspired her to start Curls Inc., a non-profit organization catering to women of color battling cancer, supporting them by providing free wigs.

“A lot of people say ‘oh, it will grow back,’ but it’s not that it’s gonna grow back, it’s that you're losing you’re losing control of every aspect of your life,” she said.

Every other month, the group hosts a pop-up shop where women can get fitted with a new hair piece by a professional stylist.

“When you feel beautiful, it does something to your spirit,” Betts said.
