After a day of heavy rain across the Piedmont Wednesday, with some areas picking up over an inch of precipitation, dry conditions will resume Thursday and Friday before another round of heavy rain moves in for the weekend.

High pressure shifting across the central Appalachians today will bring sunshine back across the region along with some cooler air. Temperatures will be back towards seasonable levels, with highs topping off in the upper 30s and 40s in the mountains and low to mid 50s across the Piedmont. Dry conditions will prevail through Friday before an additional heavy-rain system approaches for the weekend.

Plenty of moisture lifting from the Gulf beginning late Friday will interact with the passage of a cold front on Saturday, kicking off what will be a period of prolonged wet weather. Expect additional rounds of heavy rain through the weekend, bringing another three-quarters of an inch to two inches of rain from Saturday morning into Sunday with up to three inches possible in the mountains.

The wet weekend will lead into an unsettled work week, where the chance for showers will remain through at least next Thursday. Grab the umbrellas... and keep them out!
