The video, shared on Facebook over the weekend, shows one student punching another at North Syracuse Junior High.

Spectrum News has blurred the students' faces to protect their identities.

District officials said they became aware an altercation over the weekend, and initiated the student disciplinary process.

Investigators have now confirmed that the two students are friends, and agreed to meet in the bathroom for the sole purpose of participating in a slap box contest.

Students said they aren't surprised by the violence.

"It's something that occurs so regularly that I don’t know I feel like it should be on the news every day. That'd be more normal,” said Giorgio Rawda, a student.

Neither student was injured nor has the district initiated the student disciplinary process.

Superintendent Annette Speach released a statement saying the district has increased security within the building:

“The North Syracuse Central School District is committed to ensuring that all students are provided a safe and appropriate learning environment. Those that do not comply with this expectation will be dealt with appropriately.”
