Getting around the city can be a daunting task for New Yorkers with disabilities, but the Taxi and Limousine Commission says it's hoping to change that.

The Accessible Dispatch Program lets users request a wheelchair-friendly taxi for pickup over the phone or through a mobile app.

Once restricted only to Manhattan, it will now be expanding to all five boroughs thanks to growing demand.

"Whereas a few years ago, we only had about 200 accessible yellow taxis, we have now over 2,000 accessible yellow taxis. So together with our accessible green taxis, we have at least 2,500 accessible taxis, and that fleet is growing," said Meera Joshi, commissioner of the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The commissioner says drivers do get a financial incentive for participating in the program, but there is no fare increase for riders who use the app.
