IRVING, N.Y. — An ice jam in Cattaraugus Creek led to a tense few moments late Tuesday morning in Sunset Bay.

Kristin Lundin, who works Sportsman's Bar, says she heard a flood siren go off at 11 a.m. to notify residents to move their cars up the road and across the train tracks.

She then kept a close eye on conditions outside.

"We noticed a little bit of water coming up in the yard, and then within minutes, literally minutes, everything was under water, and it was splashing up against the house and the bar," Lundin said.

Lundin says at one point, she was worried she would be trapped in the bar, but by 11:45 a.m., the water level had dropped back to normal.

While the Sunset Bay Volunteer Fire Company was monitoring the situation, Assistant Chief Aaron Weiskerger says ultimately they didn't have to do anything because the ice jam broke on its own.

"It did have enough water and force behind it to push the ice right into the creek, the lake," Weiskerger said.

Weiskerger says they typically activate the siren at least once a year.

He says Tuesday was the second time they've done it in 2018 after activating it two weeks ago.
