CHARLOTTE -- Bank of America is ending a checking account popular with many low-income customers.

Bank of America's e-banking accounts had no monthly fee and no minimum balance.

At last check, a change.org petition asking for Bank of America to keep e-banking has more than 50,000 signatures.

The bank started its e-banking in 2010 and stopped creating new e-banking accounts in 2013.

A spokesperson says 5 to 7 percent of customers are e-banking customers.

Bank of America is moving customers to core checking accounts, which come with a $12 monthly fee unless the account has a monthly direct deposit of $250 or an average daily balance of $1,500 or more.
