Good news for those who choose to bike their way through the city.

The Transportation Department is planning to construct two pairs of protected bike lanes across Manhattan.

It has proposed 26th and 29th streets in Midtown because of their width and because they are not cut off by parks.

Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says they can't wait any longer.

"We certainly feel a sense of urgency in light of what we saw, unfortunately, with cyclist fatalities last year," she said.

Although the city had a lower number of roadway fatalities last year, the number of cyclist fatalities was up more than usual.

Each lane will cost just under $500,000.
