NEW YORK - Lawyers for the man charged in the Halloween terror attack say he is willing to plead guilty if he's spared the death penalty.

Sayfullo Saipov's attorneys told a judge the victims' families could avoid a drawn-out legal process if Attorney General Jeff Sessions decides not to seek the death penalty.

Federal prosecutors say Saipov was inspired by the Islamic State group when he drove a rented truck onto a Lower Manhattan bike path killing 8 people.

He is currently being held without bail.
