A new study finds a connection between lack of sleep and mental health problems among city students.

The Health Department found on an average school night, 75 percent of New York City high school students got less than eight hours of sleep, while only 11 percent of school children ages 6 to 12 got less than nine hours.

The Health Department says there's a definite link between less sleep and too much time in front of a computer or smartphone.

Inadequate sleep was also found to be associated with poor mental health, including emotional and behavioral problems in children, and symptoms of depression in adolescents.

The city has made mental health awareness a top priority with the initiative 'Thrive NYC,' spearheaded by First Lady Chirlane McCray.
