UTICA, N.Y. -- A Utica ski area hasn't seen much action in the last few years due to a lack of snow, but depending on the weather, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said the Val Bialas Sports Center may open this winter.

The city operates it after the former operator announced last year that he was stepping down.

Although the Mohawk Valley has seen plenty of snow this season, Palmieri said last week's rainy weather set things back.

"We have some snow at this point, but this weekend, once again, it looks like the weather is going to be relatively warm," said Palmieri. "So we will open it up, once it's safe, and it's certifed by the state."

The sports center has only been open six days in the last two years because of the weather.
