The NYPD is touting record-low crime numbers.

At the end of 2017, the department says the city saw the lowest level of crime in more than six decades.

There were 290 murders recorded for the year in the city, more than 40 less than the previous year.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill says officers will continue to keep New Yorkers safe, as well as work to portray the city in a positive light.

"New York is not the violent nightmare that we once read about in the press, watched on TV and saw in the movies. It's our home, and we're willing to fight for it," O'Neill said.

The NYPD hopes and expects the crime levels to decrease for 2018 as well.
