A city investigation finds the Department of Homeless Services doesn't screen facilities before homeless families move in.

The report released Thursday from the Department of Investigation found homeless families with children are often put in hotels that have a history of prostitution, assault and drugs.

Investigators found, between January and August of last year, more than half of the sites housing homeless families had multiple arrests on the premises.

"We found multiple instances in the first two hotels we looked at, we found multiple instances of sex trafficking, narcotics activity," said Mark Peters with the Department of Investigation. "We even had homeless residents who were being solicited for prostitution activity at these hotels. These were obviously places that were not suitable for children and families."

There were two hotels in the Bronx investigators found that were particularly troubling. And once alerted to this, city officials immediately pulled homeless families out of one of the hotels. And in the case of the other one, they reserved all the remaining hotel rooms - effectively taking over the entire place themselves.
