SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A new year brings new leadership for the city of Syracuse.

Ben Walsh was sworn in as Syracuse's next mayor as 2017 came to a close.

Walsh, who ran as an Independence Party candidate, made history as the second minor-party candidate elected as Syracuse mayor.

Walsh reappointed nine commissioners on Sunday.

He also appointed a deputy commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs and two communications professionals.

"From the moment I was elected, I've been working hard, building my team, getting ready for this moment and I'm ready. I have no doubt there will be some surprises along the way and it is a daunting challenge, but it's one that I believe I'm up for," Walsh said.

Walsh follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, who also served as Syracuse mayor.
