While New Year's Eve celebrations are kicking into high gear all over the world, Kwanza celebrations continued for a fifth night on Saturday with residents coming together to celebrate African culture.

Members of the Sankofa Community Empowerment nonprofit held their annual celebration of Kwanzaa in Bedford-Stuyvesant Saturday evening.  Each day of the week-long celebration of African culture represents a different principle.  The program tries to educate more of the public on what Kwanzaa is.

Organizers, including Lurie Daniel Favors, the co-founder of Sankofa, say they also award individuals who have worked within the community this past year.

"We're celebrating the 5th day of Kwanzaa which is Nia, for purpose. It really is just a time for us to celebrate and really be committed to empowering others as we have been empowered."

Several local Brooklyn vendors also attended the celebration, selling everything from candles, to jewelry and African paintings.
