LYSANDER, N.Y. -- It won't be long before the new federal tax code is in effect and many across our region are taking action.

In Lysander, the town office opened Saturday for homeowners wanting to prepay their 2018 property taxes.

Under the new code, residents will no longer receive deductions for state and local property and income taxes over $10,000 dollars.

But if homeowners prepay now for next year, they could see one last deduction.

Many residents are confused by the new code, but are prepaying anyway in hopes of seeing some benefit.

"It's a lot of confusion and I just thought I'd do that even though I didn't have my tax bill yet," said Phyllis Straub.

The new tax bill will take effect Monday, January 1.
