STATEWIDE -- Longtime State Representative from San Antonio, Ruth Jones McClendon, was laid to rest Thursday.

She served 10 terms in the Texas House, after first being elected to the San Antonio City Council. McClendon was known for her quick whit and straight talk.

"We knew that if she invited you to a steak lunch at the Hoffbrau, she was probably going to ask for a favor," said Texas House Speaker, Rep. Joe Straus, R-San Antonio. "And she was probably going to get it, too. We knew it was a really big favor and an especially serious issue if she offered to pick you up in her Jag."

McClendon was known for winning broad-based support for her initiatives. A Democrat, she passed almost 150 bills in her time at the Texas Legislature--most of which was under a Republican majority.

"There is hope for the wrongly convicted because of the Exoneration Commission that she created," Straus said.

Tommy Calvert, Bexar County Commissioner for Precinct 4, was McClendon's intern in 1999. Calvert said she always put others first.

"Thank you for being a friend to children in juvenile detention that you will never meet," he said. "Thank you for being a friend to the homeless and those who are most in need."

Calvert recalled his last time with McClendon.

"We started talking about President Trump, and Ruth let out a 'Mmmm.' I knew Ruth was still there," he said.

"If you really care about Ruth, don't stop because she stopped," said Rodney Ellis, a former Texas State Senator.

McClendon was buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. She was 74.
