WILMINGTON -- A man charged with killing someone he mistakenly thought stole a boat from his marine shop appeared in court on Thursday in Bladen County.

David Gore faces murder charges in the death of Allen Blanchard.

The Sheriff’s Office said Gore confronted two men at an abandoned lumber mill in Kelly after getting a tip that the $200,000 stolen boat might be there.

Law enforcement said Gore found two men taking scrap metal from the mill, confronted them, and shot Allen Blanchard. Blanchard later died from his injuries.

Authorities said there is no evidence that the two men had any connection to the missing boat. The victim’s wife, Tara Thau, said it’s been an emotional week for the entire family.

"I never in my life thought I would lose him this way, where somebody took him from me. We moved here six months ago for a better life, not for a tragedy to happen,” said Thau.

Gore’s is out of jail on a $100,000 bond.
