PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Town leaders of Pittsford, Perinton and Brighton say the state's Canal Corporation has agreed to hold-off on clear-cutting trees along the Erie Canal until February.

Opponents of a plan to clear vegetation along the Erie Canal path voiced their frustrations with local leaders Monday night to discuss the state power authority's plan to cut down trees and shrubs.

People opposed to the idea worry it would affect the integrity of the canal walls as well as the beauty of the pathways.

Some say the authority is using outdated information in its planning.

"Look at individual locations, individual trees. Look at the quality and types of soils," said former Brighton Town Supervisor Sandra Frankel. "Look at the specifics of each area because that's the science of today and that's not what they're using. They're using science from 2008 and doesn't really reflect the needs of the community."

Frankel hopes the affected towns of Pittsford, Perinton and Brighton will ask the courts to stop the plan and see if an environmental review needs to be done.
