PLAINVILLE, N.Y. -- An Onondaga County couple is recovering after they had to be rescued from the Seneca River. It happened in Plainville around 5 p.m. Friday.

State police say a woman kayaked into the Seneca River in an attempt to rescue her dog, who got loose on the ice. Her kayak capsized as she tried to get the pup. That's when her husband took an ATV to go after them both and got stuck.

Minutes later, the woman was rescued from the water by Air One and taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The Plainville Fire Department says the woman was conscious and breathing as she left.

Her husband, along with their golden retriever, Curtis, were then rescued as well. Crews say the frigid temperature made the rescues difficult, but they are thankful it all worked out.

Officials urge the public to stay off the ice to prevent situations like this from happening.
