CHARLOTTE -- Some major changes are happening at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

The facility is going through a roughly $5 billion renovation and expansion project over the next decade.

The airport is building a larger pick up and drop off area and is expanding Concourse A.

Passengers will be able to take moving sidewalks to the new nine gate concourse expansion.

"A lot of the facilities that you see under construction at the facilities right now are to serve our local customers," said Charlotte Deputy Aviation Director Jack Christine.

The first phase of the Concourse A expansion is expected to be done this summer.

The airport is also building a new, much larger, air traffic control tower.
