UTICA, N.Y. -- It was an exciting morning for more than a hundred Mohawk Valley children as they got to shop with a cop.

Several police agencies joined the Utica Police Department on Saturday for the annual "Shop With a Cop" event at Walmart in North Utica.

Each child received $100 to spend on whatever they wanted.

Many chose not to spend it on themselves.

"They'll pick up a gift that they want to buy for themselves, put it down, and buy their little brother something. So then that tugs on the heartstrings a little bit, so the police officer ends up grabbing the gift and buying it for them anyway," said Utica Police Department Sergeant James Laurey.

Money for the event was provided from fundraisers throughout the year.
