Some areas across western North Carolina woke up to a taste of winter Friday morning as light snow showers moved through parts of the southwestern mountains.

Many across the Piedmont and mountains should, at some point between Friday and Saturday morning, see at least some snowflakes fall from the sky, with some areas likely seeing some kind of accumulation.

With cooler air moving in from the northwest and moisture streaming in from the south, we're looking at a set up in which we will see some kind of winter weather across the region. Light snow accumulations will be likely in the mountains and foothills through Saturday morning, where 2"-4" will be possible -- perhaps locally higher amounts farther south.

As we head into late today, areas along and to the north of I-85 should start to see snow mixed in with rain before changing to wet snow overnight.

The northern Piedmont, like Catawba, Iredell, Rowan county and areas north of that could also be looking at 2"-4" inches of snow by Saturday morning. However, with ground temperatures being as warm as they are, most accumulations will occur on grassy or elevated surfaces rather than roads and highways.

The forecast gets a bit trickier for the Charlotte metro region. For now, it looks like Charlotte should just see a chilly rain through this evening before seeing a rain snow mix later tonight.

Precipitation could very well switch to all snow by Saturday morning, but once again, keep in mind, with near surface temperatures hovering near freezing and ground temperatures as warm as they have been for the start of this season, little accumulation on roads is expected. If we do see any snow "sticking", it will likely be confined to grassy surfaces.
