A high school student's rape in a Manhattan campus stairwell is raising serious security concerns.

Police say 18-year-old Jevon Martin attacked a 16-year-old girl Monday at the Washington Irving campus in Gramercy Park.

Several schools share the property.

Martin was arrested and charged.

"I feel kind of disturbed hearing about this, because the fact that somebody would do something like this especially in a school environment really just baffles my mind," said one student.

"It's just horrible. And also I believe there should be more protection inside the school to help out the students and keep everyone aware of what's going on and protected," said another student.

In a statement, the department of Education says, "This troubling incident was immediately reported and we are working closely with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation. We are treating this with the utmost seriousness and are providing the campus with additional guidance and safety supports."
