WILMINGTON -- Wilmington Police are warning residents to be aware of a jury scam.

The police department has received calls from residents saying scammers are identifying themselves as members of law enforcement over the phone.

They say the caller tells residents they have a warrant out for their arrest for missing jury duty. The caller then tells them they have to pay a fine of more than $1,000 over the phone.

Police say if you get this call, do not pay money over the phone or agree to meet with the caller in person. You're also asked to hang up immediately and report the call to authorities.

A quick reminder, the Wilmington Police Department will never call you if you've missed jury duty. If someone does miss jury duty, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office nor court staff will ask for payment over the phone or any of your personal information.
