A vigil was held Monday night for a 14-year-old boy who killed while he rode his bike in Brooklyn.

A BMW struck Edwin Ajcalon at the intersection of 23rd St. and Fifth Ave. in Sunset Park around 5:43 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the Brooklyn resident was riding his bike and making a turn when the vehicle hit him.

Elected officials and transportation advocates said at the vigil that the Ajcalon's death demonstrates that the city needs more speed cameras and new laws to make streets safer.

"The death of Edwin today must be responded with unity in this community and continued effort to change the laws in this community and bring safer streets to every corner of this entire city," said Carlos Menchaca, the local city councilman.

"The reason these tragedies occur is because drivers are behaving recklessly," said Paul Steely White of advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. "Drivers have more responsibility, because they have greater capacity to do harm on our streets."

Police believe Ajcalon did not have the right of way.

Investigators said the 19-year-old driver remained on the scene and was treated for shock.
