The city is refunding and dismissing millions of dollars' worth of parking tickets due to an error, the department of finance confirmed Monday night.

According to a spokesperson, the department found out that a change in the parking ticket rule for failing to display a Muni Meter receipt had not been applied to tickets that had already been issued.

As a result, the city is refunding about 400,000 tickets worth a total of about $18 million, and dismissing about 100,000 tickets that are worth about $8 million.

Anyone entitled to a refund will get one of two things in the mail - either a refund check or a letter explaining their ticket has been dismissed.
