A man is in critical condition after being shot by police in Brooklyn Thursday night.

Police say he was carrying a BB gun.

Officers responded to a call about a man with a gun on Church Avenue in East Flatbush around 10 p.m.

They tried to apprehend a man inside a store, but he ran away when confronted.

"The suspect fled northbound on 34th Street where he was observed with a firearm in his hand.  One police officer discharged one round, which struck the suspect in the leg," said NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan.

Police caught up with the man, who was taken to the hospital.

They say they found this weapon at the scene, which was later determined to be a BB gun.

An investigation is ongoing.
