Residents in Dewitt have opposing views on proposals for the Interstate 81 viaduct project.

The town supervisor and deputy supervisor spoke out against the 'community grid' option. They say if Route 481 were converted into Route 81, there would be traffic and noise impacts on DeWitt.

But some residents disagree. They say a community grid option would be more inclusive.

“From the start, the DOT's favorite option … seems to be the community grid, which means they're going to remove a couple miles of 81, which currently travels through the city,” said DeWitt Deputy Supervisor Kerry Mannion. "We feel this is a terrible option for DeWitt as well as all of Central New York, and the economy of upstate New York."

“I would like us to be more concerned about the welfare of the city, and I think a community grid would be helpful to that,” said ACTS member and DeWitt resident Ona Cohn Bregman.

Ultimately, the final decision resides with the state.
