Construction has begun on a new tunnel that will help bring water to the city.
The city's department of environmental protection said it has started construction on a 2.5-mile bypass tunnel, which is expected to be about 600 feet under the Hudson River near Newburgh.
Crews are slated to use a massive boring machine for the $1 billion project.
The bypass tunnel is part of a larger project to fix leaks in the 85-mile-long Delaware Aqueduct, which helps deliver 500 million gallons of water a day from four reservoirs in the Catskill Mountains.
The aqueduct was first built more than 70 years ago.
The project is expected to last six years.
