Vibrant costumes, elaborate dances, and plenty of Caribbean pride were on display Monday in Brooklyn.

The West Indian American Day Carnival kicked off in Crown Heights in the morning.

"I'm having a lot of fun," one attendee said. "The floats, and the people dancing, and the music."

The celebration featured food, music, and Caribbean traditions as revelers marched along the Eastern Parkway.

People who NY1 spoke with said the yearly tradition is a special event.

"The ambiance, all the people, it's, well, for right now I guess, it's amazing," one woman said, watching the parade.

This year's event had extra security after two people were killed before last year's J'ouvert Festival, the pre-dawn party that precedes the parade.

This year marked the parade's 50th anniversary.
