ITHACA, N.Y. -- Chances are if you're driving through Ithaca, you may have noticed a sign or two saying their police department is hiring.

Officers say the department is going through what they're calling a "staffing crisis," due to some retirements and transfers. More than 10 positions are currently open, and they are encouraging anyone interested to apply.

The department says they are at mission critical, meaning they are only able to provide services critical to the day to day operations. While many officers have been working overtime to help fill the void, they are missing out on opportunities to engage with the community.

"We're not able to provide those ancillary services that the public has come to expect and demand from us, and rightfully so,” said Public Information Officer Jamie Williamson.

The deadline to apply for the police exam is October 19. The exam itself is December 2.
