A woman is in the hospital after she fell several feet through a collapsed sidewalk in Manhattan on Saturday, according to police.

"Unfortunately, the concrete floor is all old and deteriorating, and you can't see that from up above," said a maintenance worker.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. on West 158th St. between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave. in Washington Heights.

Police said the 48-year-old woman passed an apartment building when the pavement caved in, sending her six feet below the ground.

She suffered a fractured leg, and first responders took her to Harlem Hospital.

The maintenance worker at that building said he had never seen anything like it.

"We helped her out and the firefighters came, and that's what we did," he said. "We tried to keep her calm."

The maintenance worker said that in the meantime, that section of the sidewalk is being blocked off to prevent any future incidents.

There is no word yet on when the pavement will be fixed.
