A Breezy Point, Queens woman is paying it forward to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. NY1's Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

Maura Buckley knows what it means to survive a natural disaster; The Breezy Point resident is still not back in her home after Hurricane Sandy, but that's not stopping her from helping victims of Hurricane Harvey.

"You lose everything. However, it is material things, so you do realize what is important," said Maura Buckley, the founder of Operation Kid Comfort.

While Buckley is making way to demolish her Sandy-ravaged home next month, she's collecting gift cards to help the recovery efforts in Texas.

"In a few months, they're going to need to buy items, even towels," said Buckley. "I got to my apartment, and I went to take a shower, and I didn't even have towels. So just things you don't even think of."

She said that in her experience, the gift cards she received during her time of need were incredibly helpful.

"They can pick out exactly what they need or want at that time, and it will be new," said Buckley.

Reflecting on all of the groups who helped Breezy Point, a community that is still rebuilding, almost five years after Sandy, Buckley says she has a message for Texas:

"Let everyone come and help, because you do need that. You need that support. It's what gets you through it, and you will see that material things can be replaced," said Buckley. "It does take time, but, ultimately, you will get there."

Buckley intends to collect gift cards until Oct. 31 through her organization, Operation Kid Comfort.
