Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed several pieces of legislation aimed at snuffing out smoking and improving the health of New Yorkers.

Among them is a $2.50 price hike on cigarettes, making them $13 a pack.

There will also be a 10 percent tax on smokeless tobacco products, with the revenue going toward public housing.

And pharmacies are not permitted to sell tobacco products.

Another measure requires a new license for retailers who sell electronic cigarettes and bans their use in communal areas of buildings with less than 10 units.

The mayor says the legislation sends an important message to tobacco manufacturers.

"You are not welcome in New York City," de Blasio said. "We are not going to help you spread these dangerous products. We are going to do everything we can do to fight them. We're not going to keep watching as thousands die, who shouldn't die."

The mayor's office hopes to reduce the number of smokers in the city by 160,000 in the next three years.
