NEW YORK - City students are making the grade, showing a gradual improvement on state tests across the board.

The latest scores released Tuesday show 40.6 percent of city students grades 3 through 8 as proficient in English Language Arts.

That's close to three percent higher than last year.

Math scores are also up, with close to 38 percent proficiency, compared to just 36 in 2016.

Similar gains were seen at the statewide level, among all race groups.

Students with disabilities or who are English Language Learners also showed improvement.

Around 19 percent of students statewide opted out of the exams this year, down from 21 percent in 2016.
