A rapidly increasing number of families are moving into city homeless shelters.

This, according to a new report from the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York.

It says between 2012 and 2016, the number of families entering shelters went up by nearly 23 percent.

Families with children are also living in shelters for longer, with the average stay now lasting over a year.

The report blames rising rents and falling incomes, though it notes the trend is noticeably smaller in districts with large numbers of rent-stabilized units.

Nearly 134,000 New Yorkers spent some part of 2015 in a city homeless shelter.
