Confederate flags that were on display in a Manhattan apartment window were taken down Saturday.

They had been hanging in an apartment near Avenue D and East 8th St. in the East Village for several months.

Police said a man said he entered the apartment without permission to conduct a wellness check, and removed the flags while inside. It is not clear why, and no charges have been filed.

Friday night, police arrested another man who allegedly broke a window and entered the building to try and remove the flags. That man told NY1 he opposed them.

One resident NY1 spoke with said he is glad the flags are no longer on display.

"It's going to cause problems, you know what I'm saying? To prevent that from happening, I'm glad they took it down, because if not, trust me it would've been wild," a man said. "And over here, it gets like that, they don't like that. You got all types of cultures here."

People in the neighborhood began to take issue after last weekend's white nationalist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the violence that followed.
